The School’s First Integrated Prom is in 2007?

I saw this on another blog recently. A CNN story from April 23, 2007 reads “ASHBURN, Georgia (CNN) — Students of Turner County High School started what they hope will become a new tradition: Black and white students attended the prom together for the first time on Saturday.

In previous years, parents had organized private, segregated dances for students of the school in rural Ashburn, Georgia, 160 miles south of Atlanta.”

This is both good and bad. Bad that the parents perpetuated the segregation all these years and good that they finally put everyone together. Is the school itself still segregated? This is telling of The South. Unfortunately it tells a bit of truth the rest of the US may not have known about. Segregation is alive and well in parts of The South.

This may well be an example to the rest still sorting by color, it’s just not warranted for any reason!
